Prayers for the Fourth Sunday after Pentecost (B) – June 24, 2012

Scriptures:
2 Corinthians 6:1-13
Mark 4:35-41

Call to Worship:
Leader:    Let those who know your name put their trust in you, O Lord, for you do not forsake those who seek you.
People:    We put our trust in you, O Lord, for you have made yourself known to us.
Leader:    Let those who know your name recount all your praises, O Lord. Let us rejoice in your deliverance.
People:    We praise you, O Lord, for you have given us faith so that in you, we can move mountains.
All:    Give us faith, O Lord, for you are the one for whom even the wind and the sea obey.
– Prepared by Michael Anthony Howard from Psalm 9:14 and Mark 4:35-41

Opening Prayer:
O God, in the midst of the storms of life, you are there.
In our despair, you bring hope; in our fear, you speak words of peace; in destruction, you bring new life.
We are thankful that you do not leave us alone, that you are always with us.
Help us find hope and peace and new life
as we walk by faith, knowing you are our ever present help in times of need.
In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
-Prepared by Michael Anthony Howard from 2 Corinthians 6:1-13, Psalm 46:1.

Prayer of Confession:
God of grace and glory,
we thank you that you judge us not by the perfection of our actions,
but by our readiness to live boldly by faith.
Help us, as individuals and as a congregation,
to trust you and follow where you lead,
that in Christ your name may be glorified in all the earth. Amen.
-(Ruth Duck, United Methodist Book of Worship no. 483)

Words of Assurance
Leader:     Hear the good news: Now is the time to accept the grace of God, for today is the day of salvation.
People:    Our hearts are wide open and we accept God’s grace into our lives.
– Prepared by Michael Anthony Howard, from 2 Corinthians 6:1-13.

Prayer for Illumination
God of power and might,
give us the kind of faith that can sink mountains into the sea.
As the scripture is read and your Word proclaimed,
enlarge, inflame, and fill our hearts with your endless love.
Because you are with us, let your Word strengthen us today,
reminding us of your power to calm the wind and the waves.
In Jesus Christ or Lord we pray. Amen.
– Prepared by Michael Anthony Howard for Mark 4:35-41. Inspired by Charles Wesley’s hymn, “Give Me the Faith Which Can Remove.”
